Yellow Cab Pizza – Dear Darla Pizza

Filed under: Comfort Food, Pizza — gourmandtales @ 10:11 am

Let me interrupt my Hongkong series with this pizza love. Yellow cab opened in our city with a big bang. Delivering big 18 inches pizzas, loaded with toppings.  All of us thought is was an american franchise, with how the advertisement looked like showing caucasians, showing new york city. Glad to know that its proudly Filipino owned and it already have branches abroad.

They came up with an imitation to C Italian dining PANIZZA and they call it Dear Darla. let see how they fare in their try… Photo-0152Photo-0153

Not as thin as the ones of C’s, not also as savory. It is a cheap and closer(in terms of distance not in taste…NO WAY) alternative. A healthier way in eating my favorite food.Photo-0154Photo-0155Photo-0156

Another new item is the baked potato halves.Photo-0157loaded with cheese and bacon bits.  it was good, but it would have been better if it was baked more so you get a golden brown crust

Mien San Noodle House – Granada St. San Juan

Filed under: Asian, Chinese, Comfort Food, Greenhills — gourmandtales @ 9:50 am

Address:

36 Villa Ortigas II, Granada St.,
Quezon

Tel no: (63 2) 724-8388

Parking – limited slots available in front

THis noodle house has been there for more than 10 years already. And you can see this fact base on their signage..which still has their own 6 digit tel no, the interiors which are really outdated.

I ate here once when they initially opened. like it, but never had the chance to eat here till now. Plsce still looked the same . No significant changes.

Pork and Casbbage dumplings- mien-02mien-08Freshly cooked, served hot. Filling was substansial, tasted great. no fatty extenders. great with the dipping saucesmien-01

Shrimp and Chives Dumplings-mien-06mien-07 i was surpirsed by the contents of these dumplings. You can see the whole shrimp, and not the chopped shrimps we use to find in other places here. Very very good. Has this pan fried. the pork variant we had it steamed.

Beef tendon Noodles- mien-03 the noodles unlike the noodle houses we are used to, like north park, ling nam etc etc.. are fat just like a japanese udon. These noodle are of the taiwanese kind, which you can also find when you order noodles in Ersao. its chewy and very filing. Beef was very tender and the broth very flavorful.

Seafood Chami-mien-05 one of the dishes that is popular in this resto. Chani.. meaning pan-fried.  this dish can be a bit oily… but otherwise it was very good. It was loaded with seafood and veggies, the noodles were cooked just right.

Overall, the place still maintain its quality in regard to their food even after all these years. the place really needs a facelift though, but i guess with people still flocking to this noodle house till late in the evening, i think the owners and the customers are happy.  So i guess, why cant something that aint broke right??  to those who havent try this place.. come and enjoy their food.

Savory Chicken – lots of branches

Filed under: Asian, Chinese, Comfort Food, Malls — gourmandtales @ 12:42 pm

Initially Opened in 1950, first branch being the one is Escolta, which by the way is still opened, i though this retaurant will only have a couple of branched by the end of this decade, but lo and behold, i was surprise to see a lot of branches opening, especially in the SM malls.  For me, its a good thing, i was sick and tired of eating at the usual suspects when i go to SM. Now there is another option.

Shrimp puff 260-sa-05sa-11 i first saw this dish on the website of Lori Baltazar, She described it so beautifully that i am ashamed to described it myself.  I orderd this dish bec of Lori and i didnt regret it,. It was good, the Shrimp was cooked just right, the breading was puffy but still light and not oily.

Lumpiang Shanghai 135 -sa-06 16 pices of ground pork mixed with minced veggies, wrapped in a lumpia skin. I like the fact that the lumpia wrapper was thick, it was just right, the meat inside didnt have too much extenders.

Lomi 180- sa-02Classic thick noodles, swimming in a dark brown sauce loaded with differetn ingredients topped with fried garlic and shallots. This is one of the Chinese comfort food, served piping hot, good to fight any disease. hehe, i have yet to try Lomi places in Batangas, they say its delicious and cheap

Spinach Seafood Soup 160sa-03- this was ordinary, nothing great.

Kangkong w Lechon Kawali 195sa-10- braised Kangkong.. still green and fresh, cooked just right to maintain its colot and texture/ THe lechon kawali has just the right amount of fat intermingled with the meat. THe skin was crispy

Shanghai Fried Rice 140- sa-04 nothing unsual here, fairly done

Savory Chicken 1 whole 320sa-08sa-09- the star of the show. Cooked perfectly, juicy and succulent. one of my favorite Chicken here in Manila, the other one being Country Chicken. Can be eaten alone or with its special brown sauce.

Good thing they are opening in different malls, now there is an option to eat great Chicken and you dont have to travel all the way to Escolta. One thing i dont like is that they charge for the extra chicken sauce.

One last question, does doing this really kill the bacteria off the eating utensils?sa-01

Excellente Ham – Quiapo

Filed under: Comfort Food — gourmandtales @ 11:03 am

Address: Carriedo area, 155-157 Palanca St. Quiapo.

Christmas is just around the corner and one of the gift to give and gift you will receive would be HAM…

Ham… Described as the meat form a pig(pork) usually taken from the thigh and rump(near the butt) of the said animal, Cured in salt or sugar to preserve its meat. and add a lot of flavour..

One of the best ham for mesp_a1928 available here in the philippines comes from a small stall in Quiapo.. Aptly named Excellente ham

i know, i know there a re people out there that would say they like Majestic or Adelinas or Plaza Ham, well, the four of them are really on top of their game when it comes to Philippine Ham industry.sp_a1929

Why do i like excellente? Well, i like the taste, not too salty, not too sweet, THe marbling on the meat is just about right.

sp_a1933

How do i eat it?sp_a1934 i usually pan fry it to get it heated up(i dont like cold food that much) and  crisp up the fat.  Pour the sauce over and reduce it up a bit/ SErve with eggs-over easy.:)

Butter Diner – Cubao, Quezon City

Filed under: Breakfast food, Comfort Food — gourmandtales @ 1:29 pm

Address: Shopwise Arcade, Gen. Aguinaldo Ave., Araneta Center

Quezon City, Metro Manila

Tel No: (02) 421-0030

Operating Hours: 6am to 2am

Located in the busy area of Cubao Quezon City, this little boast of having 30 kinds of flavored butter. The interiors are reminscent of an old amarican diners with the walls decored with comics.

I love the table top functional decor. sp_a2380The cute butter diner toaster which can be used to toast bread.

Service was fast and efficient.

THe menu might overwhelm you because they offer a lot of items and i mean a lot….

On the table

Eggs and bacon P89sp_a2381sp_a2382 4 pcs of bacon with 2 eggs, orderd scrambled here, but u can order it any style u want. – nothing special, the a little sloppy on the presentation.

Strawberry pancakes P120-sp_a2385 stacked of 2 pancakes stuiffed with strawberries topped with whipped strawberry butter and drizzled with strawberry syrup. What killed the dish here was the strawberry syrup they use. it was too watered down, making the pancakes a little mushy, would have appreciated it more if they would just make their won and not used commercialized ones

Strawberry shake P130- sp_a2383hmmm– again, nothing extraordinary, Filling station in Makati still serves the best milk shake in town…

I love breakfast food.. even if the meal was not that great i would come back here to try the other items

Hong Kong Food Chronicles – Comfort food

Filed under: Comfort Food, Hong Kong — gourmandtales @ 2:57 am

This is the start of a series of food trips during my trip to hongkong…

For me, the best Chinese food can be found in Hongkong… I love going to this place, eating the food, shopping. Seeing a lot of people always in a hurry and I love the public transportation here.

One of my favorite food in hongkong is actually one of my comfort foods… Wantons or wontons… so, here I am on a quest for the best wantons in hongkong

Tsim Chai Kee—The home of the giant wantons…sp_a1556sp_a1558sp_a1559

This was the first stop…for HK$16, u get 4 big wantons in a clear broth., the wanton occupying the whole soup spoon filled with chopped prawns,

We also ordered beef noodles..sp_a1561 very tender beef fillets, eggs noodles cooked aldente, in a hot beef broth..

Next stop.. Maks noodle house-maks this place was the one visited by Anthony Bourdain in his search for sp_a1562sp_a1564sp_a1567wantons and noodles…

I ordered the wantons with beef tendon soup.. the wantons are smaller than Tsim chai kee but the filling of the wantons here taste better, the shrimp has more crunch to it…it was more plump… then tenon was very very soft, almost melts in ur mouth softness…

Next stop. Samdor noodles.sp_a1570sp_a1571sp_a1572sp_a1573.-Shrimp wanton soup—6 pieces of wantons with whole shrimp ang ground pork inside… the broth here has the most flavour compared to the other two places ive been too.

Another special dish here is the fried fish ball…sp_a1574sp_a1575different from the fishballs we have at home. This was gigiantic… served with a “bagoong” like sauce made form clams instead of shrimps.. very very salty… I used red vinegar for a dip instead…

All of the places can be found in the Central District of Hongkong…

Charlie’s Wanton Special – Mandaluyong City

Filed under: Chinese, Comfort Food, Mandaluyong City — gourmandtales @ 7:48 am

Address: 265 Haig St. Mandaluyong City

Tel No:(02) 718 1880

Parking- ample spaces in front of the Restaurant

Filipinos, because of how close they are to the Chinese are very fond of one type of Chinese food. NOODLE soup. Ma Mon Luk being the most famous among all the filipinized noodle houses. Then there are others like Panciteria Lido, Panciteria San Jacinto, Peter Lee. And This one that I usually see when I pass use the small streets of Mandaluyong going to Sta Mesa.

Interiors of the place really looks old. Chipped wooden tables and chairs. Old style small chandelier. Service is fast and attentive.

They offer a lot aside form the usual noodles, they have small orders ala carte dishes too. But I am here to try their specialty. Wantons.

On the Table

Beef and Wanton Noodles. Small 120. Beef brisket cubes, 3 wantons, egg noodles serve in a hot broth. The beef was very tender. Noodles are cooked just right, Egg based, cooked still very aldente. The Wantons was a surprised. I thought it would be all pork, but upon biting.. it revealed bits of shrimp. It was good, not as good as the ones in hongkong. But better than some wantons found here in the metro.

Asado Siopao- well.. I don’t recommend this siopao, small filling,. A bit dry.. more than a day old I think. The sauce was also too sweet for my taste..

A bowl of warm soup, fairly good wantons.. nice comfort food. No wonder people keep on flocking to this place.

Gourmet comfort food… This is how this place described their food. For me Comfort food, like taste, like subjective. What maybe comfort food for me is not really comfort food for everyone. Anyway, this place has been open for 2 years now and it surprise me that this is the first time I am gonna eat at this place. Located where “Confusion” was before. A restaurant which I haven’t eaten at also. They redesign the place to be more attractive. With see thru glass and lighting that make u see and enjoy your food, place has a upper level where u can reserve for private functions.

On the Table

Crabcakes(250)- interesting appetizer because not a lot of restaurant serve this. I remember watching Gordon Ramsay in Kitchen Nightmares and he would gauge a restaurants appetizer menu by the taste of their crabcakes. Apt 1B’s crab cakes is encased in shoe string potatoes the fried. I was expecting the inside to be smoking once cut. But was disappointed It was just warm…

Tastewise.. it was seasoned well, the mustard dressing was a great companion to the dish. Was it freshly picked crab meat? I don’t think so…

Roasted Chicken(380)- Half a chicken smeared in herbs, garlic and spoices then baked. Keeping the juices intact. The flesh still moist. Served with Garlic mashed potatoes and Herb Gravy.

Prawns in crab fat—I remember seeing this dish in a blog… but I was surprised by the size of the prawns they used… wow.. the 3 pieces were large enough to cover the entire plate… And the Crab fat…. Grr…. I wish they served free bread so I can soak the bread in this glorious fat and eat everything. To crab fat lovers.. Forget diet, forget your arteries, forget your heart even for just tonight and indulge.. Wonderful dish. The prawns were indeed fresh and cooked perfectly. No effort in removing it from the shell.. The sauce would transport you to crab fat heaven. The linguini was cooed al dente.. even when it was soaking in the aligue. Wow..

The Aftermath

White Chocolate Cheesecake(150), , I requested them not to put the whipped cream on top of the cheesecake like I saw in a number of pictures. I want to taste the cheesecake not the cream. Their cheesecake was velvety smooth, just the way I like it. Dense. With the right amount of Sweetness. The crust was not your ordinary Graham Cracker here. They use Gingersnap cookies..

Well, Definitely a place to return to.. again was surprised why I never went here to eat before..
