Let me just announce to everyone,…. THE PRESIDENT IS BACK!!  Its been more than a year since it closed and a lot of chinese here in manila has been missing one of the best Chinese  restaurant in town. So i bet a lot of people are happy that they opened!!

And to be invited to a lunch party here, i didnt even think twice in going.

THe place had renovations, the giant chandelier is now looking more modern in style. The place is brighter and cleaner looking. But what is important here is …… Is the food still great? Let me try it out for you’

Mixed appetizers-  president01presidentwith roasted pork asado, century egg, soy chicken, Jelly fish, Roasted Goose- everything was good, the Pork asado was very tender and has the perfect meat and fat ratio. Very juicy. The Roasted Goose was also delicious.

Cha Misua- carbohydrate overload!!! president1president2lots of noodles with bits and pieces of meat and seafood plus the famous orange quail egg. This dish was seasoned perfectly and cooked just right. The noodles are aldente and doestn break apart easily. It wasnt dry.

Breaded fisn with ham-  president3this was my least favorite dish of the day. The breading made the fish dry. It would be better if they used a batter kind of breading.. like the one they use in fish and chips. It could have maintain the moisture of the fish.

Scallops and Brocolli-  president4both items were cooked excellently. THe brocolli maintained its color and crispness even when cooked. The scallops were easy to eat. Dip it in chinese bagoomg to enhance the taste.

Shredded chicken soup-president5 president6this was just okay

Suahe- big size suahe, steamed to perfection. the suahe meat was sweet and plump. Peeling was nto a chore… evident that it was cooked just right.

Braised abalone with mushroom and cabbage- president7abalone when not cooked properly tend to be tough. this was easy to eat and yummy.,

Steam Lapu-lapu-president8 the soy ginger oil douse on the fish was just perfect for the fish THe flesh was soft and silky.

Fried Crab in ginger and garlic-president9 this was just lip smacking and finger licking good. grabe, i could eat this everyday.

Almong jelly-president11i just topped it with the buchi:)

THe entire meal was just exquisite. could wait to try the other dishes that made me love this resto so much like their fried squid, king dao spareribs.. yummy yummypresident12

Filed under: Banawe, Chinese, Family servings — gourmandtales @ 11:07 am

Address: 835 Banawe St. Quezon City

Tel no: 7426200

Parking: Available in front of the restaurant

There are 2 big Chinese restaurants in banawe, one is Causeway and this is the other one. I like the food here better. They cook food better. I only go to causeway for the Dimsum promo they have during the evening.

Sweet and sour pork- who wouldn’t want to get a piece of this…  SP_A2426 The pork was siliced  just right, not too thin and not too thick, floured then deep fried to produce a crispy product yet it was tender and moist inside.  The sauce was just enough and it didn’t flood the plate. The sweet and sour balance was also just right.

Seafood hotpot- other restaurant will serve more tofu then seafood, but here,  the amount of seafood and tofu was equal. SP_A2425The tofu were quickly fried and still silky inside. The seafood were cooked perfectly. The prawns were still springy and crunchy. The fish was flaky and soft, the squid was perfect and not a chore to eat.

Misua- SP_A2427noodles were cooked just right lots or meat and seafood,. Seasoned perfectly

Beef tenderloin chinese style- SP_A2428anyone who can tell me how can a chinese restaurant produce beef this soft and tender?. This was super good…

Parking Available in front of the restaurant
Banawe has a number of Taiwanese theme restaurants like Feng Wei Wei, Ersao, Tasty Dumplings and this place.

who doesn’t love a noodle house? Especially when it is raining, a bowl of hot noodle soup is the perfect meal

Beef Noodle Soup-Photo-0003 using those thick Taiwanese noodles, that resembles Japanese Udon, the broth was excellent and soothing, the beef was tender and give you hints of its marinade which I presume to be soy sauce, star anise, 5 spice powder. It didn’t over power the noodles.

Braised beef-Photo-0006 same as the ones used for the noodle toppings.  Tender and cooked well

Fried dumplings-  Photo-0001served with sweet and sour sauce, the fiiliing is primarily made from pork, the wrapper was beautifully crispy and was not oily at all. The filling tasted good.

Siomai-Photo-0002 big in size, but not big in taste

Orange Spareribs- Photo-0005 forgettable, tasted like orange concentrate on fried ribs

Chicken something—Photo-0004forgot the name, it was said to be one of their best sellers, don’t know why, didn’t taste too great

Kiampong Photo-0007– not a good version, MAKI haus has a better version of this dish

Come here for the noodles. But not for their short orders. They have a new line of dessert which looked interesting. Might give it a try nest time.Photo-0008

Yellow Chicken – Banawe St. Quezon CIty

Filed under: Banawe, Family servings, Filipino — gourmandtales @ 12:28 pm

Address: 808 Banawe Street. Quezon City, Philippines;

Phone: 467-0808

Parking: Lots of spaces in front of the restaurant

Just looking at the name, made me smile.. it was catchy and nice. What other Chicken dish is colored yellow, aside from curry?? But of course. Inasal. The Pride of Bacolod.  THere has been a lot of New Inasal places being open in the city and here in Banawe this is one of the newer places.

The interiors were kept simple. wooden chairs, and tables, I love the myriad of sauces and the nams that they conjure for the achuete oil :) SP_A2795

Lets get down to the food

Pork Sisig-SP_A2797 this was good, but the serving size was quite small. AS you can see in the pic there sizzling plate was not full. But tastewise, it was delicious. It could do without the mayo though..

Sizzling bulalo–SP_A2798 base on the pic.. you would think we got a good deal, but in fact…. there was more bones than meat… it was tender though and the sauce was good on top of rice/

Now for their specialty- THe yellow chicken Inasal. Pitso- SP_A2799SP_A2800Breast and wing part-  It looks very ncie, but sad to say, it was dry. Not only dry, buy VERY dry.. Sayang, i hope it is not like this everyday, maybe a bad day for their grill chef?  Will i give it another try?… Maybe.. but there are a lot of new place opening in Banawe…. Arrrgghhh SP_A2796

tel no:  7110255
Capacity: 40 pax

Before Banawe became a eating destination, there were just a few restaurants in the area. This place is one of the first restaurant to build a name , here. Serving excellent chinese cuisine.  The place has underwent minor renovation but i donr know why they havent torn off the old delapidated signage…. maybe its good luck for them?
On the table

Crispy Beancurd P198-SP_A2313SP_A2314 soft tufo cubes, breaded then fried to a wonderful golden brown crisp exterior but still moist and silky smooth inside. The sauce is a sweet soy glaze with a hint of tanginess that is just perfect. the way i eat this is i cut the cube in smaller squares before dousihing it with sauce so it penetrates the tofu.

Sizzling Spareribs- SP_A2316SP_A2317served stil bubbling and sizzling. the pork spareribs were so tender that you can eat it with just a spoon and fork and it just fall off the bones. The sauce is sweet and spicy and delicious.

Asparagus and Scallops-SP_A2315 using small sea scallops, the asparagus and scallops were cooked perfectly, maintaining a slight crunch in the asparagus and the scallops were not chewy. cooked in a garlic based sauce. it didnt over power the veggie and seafood.

Black and white gulaman P55SP_A2312- almond gulaman together with grass jelly. Yummy

one more thingSP_A2318…. the hot chili garlic sauce was awesome
Try the other dishes here like the crab dishes and the coral chiccken:)

Shin Choi Hot Pot – Banawe Quezon City

Filed under: Banawe, Chinese, Family servings — gourmandtales @ 12:39 pm

Address: 778 banawe st Quezon City

Tel no: 4164854

Parking: Limited spaces in front of the resto

One of the newer chinese restaurant in the banawe area. Always pack so it is wise to get a reservation.

King Dao Spareribs 200-Photo-0084  tender, meaty pork pieces fried then doused with a sweet red sauce. One of my favorite Chinese dishes and they do it very well.

Yangchow fried rice 150- hotpot3they also make great fried rice, lots of “sahog”  the rice was stir fried beautifully resulting in a fluffy texture. Yum yum

Bacon roll with minced prawn. Photo-0085Photo-0086– who wouldn’t want bacon and prawn together in a dish, this was excellent, the saltiness  and crispyness of the bacon complimanted the mild taste of the prawn. The inside was hot and moist and yummy blend of mince prawns.

Assorted combination for 4 persons 680- this was indeed a winner. In other hot pot establishment, this along would cost you more than a thousand pesos. It’s a real good deal, consisting of………a lot of things shown in the picturePhoto-0088Photo-0089hotpot

Fresh prawn ball 180-Photo-0092 no extenders here, its pure chopped prawns. Dunk it in the soup and it will result in a wonderful ball that will soak up any sauce you prepare, did I mentioned it is made fresh everyday. Boil everything in the soup, dont forget to drink the soup after cooking everything, it will be the best broth you ever tasted. And dont forget to mix the sauces to your liking:)hotpot2Photo-0091

Banawe Chronicles – Coco Asian Cafe and Bistro

Filed under: Asian, Banawe, Family servings, Fusion, Quezon City — gourmandtales @ 12:38 pm

This is be a series of restaurant in the Banawe area. :)

Address:  989 Banawe Avenue, Barangay Manresa Quezon City (just at the back of starbucks coffee)

Tel No. 364-2281

Parking: lots of spaces available

This restaurant has been open for more than a year now and the food has maintain its quality. There were rumors that it was going to close, good thing it didnt.

THe menu spans the whole continent of asia, Representing popular dishes from all over the region.

Lumpiang Shanghai-SP_A1877 this was just ordinary, nothing really great. Serving size was quite smalli

Fried Vietnamese rolls- SP_A1876better than the lumpiang shanghai, filed with vermicelli noodles, mushrooms, ground meat  etc. It uses rice paper so if not fried properly, tends to get a little oily, however they did it well as it wasn’t oily

Fried Catfish Salad-SP_A2386 good version of the dish, the dressing was excellent blend of sour, salty and sweet tones.

Tinumok- SP_A2388another ordinary filipino dish.

Pad Thai- SP_A2391this was good, not as oily as those serve in thai restaurants here

Fried prawns  in shredded sweet potato- SP_A2392it came out like the plate was on fire, am not really a sweet potato fan. The prawn was big and plump.

Humba-SP_A2387 this was very very good, pork was cooked till it was very tender, sliced so as it was not difficult to eat. The sauce was just sweet without going overboard.

Gambas- SP_A2389shrimps were perfectly cooked. Veering way from the traditional gambas, they used diced tomatoes to this dish making it more taste like an italian dish than a spanish dish.

Fried Tilapia- SP_A1879copying the dish from Recipes, they use a larger tilapia though and they friend it beautifully, keeping it moist inside

Seafood Basket-SP_A1881 assorted seafood cooked in a thick coconut cream sauce. Then served on top of a fried potato basket. The sauce was a winner in taste.

Korean beef stew- SP_A1882instead of using short ribs, they used brisket. At first I thought it was going to be a tough. But I was mistaken as it was very soft and tender. The sauce was also reduced and thicken which gave the dish more UMPH and flavor

This is one of the restaurant which has the right concept,  dishing out good dishes..except for some misses, however, the location is not really at a prime spot.SP_A1874

Zong Chinese Restaurant – Various branches

Filed under: Chinese, Family servings — gourmandtales @ 8:10 am

Branches  in Trinoma mall, Fort Strip and Westgate alabang.

this restaurant started a a small modern style chinese eating place in Mayon St, Quezon City. Later on closing shop in this area( i dont know why, it was always packed) and later on opening at the Fort then later on opened in the other two areas.

THey serve good chinese food. What i like most about this restaurant is their different takes on spareribs, with the numerous sauce choices, though i like the black vinegar and garlic the best. But i wont be talking about their pork spareribs now.

Hot and sour soup P108-zong this one  was good but fails in comparison with the best hot and sour soup in manila at SHANTUNG.

Spicy singapore style fish fillet P328-zong1 i always think there is something missing with this dish. It is sweet and spic but not overly spicy. The fish is dory fillet that is lightly floured and fried. Would like it if it was crispier.

Sundried malaysian style string beans P228 zong3- now this is one dish that i always order here. It can be a little oily sometimes but i love how the beans are cooked yet still firm and crispy. It has a little kick to it and has just enough meat to flavour the beans

Seafood fried rice P228-zong2 this was good, but not as good as the ones in Little asia.

Fried duckP248 -zong6 veering away  from the usual chicken, we  tried this dish and was not really that happy. it was a bit dry

Crispy noodle with mixed seafood P288 -zong5zong4 lots of seafood and nicely fried noodles that become aldente after soaking up the sauce of the seafood. Yummy!!!

This place is definitely a notch above north park and superbowl, but it stll is not at the same level of the chinese restaurant in binondo like Presidents

Aristocrat Restaurant – Roxas Blvd, Pasay City

Filed under: Family servings, Filipino — gourmandtales @ 12:51 pm

Address: 432 San Andres St. cor. Roxas Blvd., Malate

Manila, Metro Manila

Phone number (02) 524-7671 to 80 loc. 225 or 230

Parking Available in front and side of the restaurant.

Different function rooms available

This restaurant has been opened since 1936, and i have been eating here since I was a little kid. Even before I can order my own meal. :) This place has been there and has been always open even during the solemn holidays like Maundy thursday, Good FRiday ad black Saturday. Its was even opened during the worst weather in the metro. I remember eating here once when Metro Manila was flooded all over.

This is comfort food.  And their Chicken Barbeque has always been the top choice. But what i will be showing are other things i like here that you can order aside from Chicken BBQ.

Lumpiang Shanghai P234 -aris6  their version is among the top three lumpiang shanghai in the metro. It is fried to a beautiful crisp, The filling was meaty and tasty and cooked through.  comes with a sweet and sour .

Chicken Honey Half P212 -aris7  now instead of the usual chicken bbq, you can order this chicken,  which is marinade in honey.  The skin was thin and crispy, the meat was still juicy and soft. They usually serve it with ketchup, but i still prefer the Java sauce with it.

Pancit Palabok P172-aris5 this was just okay, nothing extraordinary.

Cliffhouse small P175-aris3 now this is my favorite aristocrat sandwich. Whats not too like about a FRIED sandiwch right, they have a large version of this, and recently came out with this cute small version, doused with cheese sauce, the filling are layers of chicken ala king, bacon/ham layer and egg layer. Absolutely love it and i bet it is also exploding in calories!!!!

Sagot  Gulaman -aris2 a tall glass of shaved ice with arnibal syrup and tapioca pearls and gelatin cubes. REFRESHING

Java rice and their plate of saucesaris

Before it was served in bottles , now its individually packed

I know a lot of you have been eating here. Well, they have been here for more than 70 years, so they must be dong something right

I Have Two Eggs – Tomas Morato, Quezon City

Filed under: Family servings, Filipino, Quezon City — gourmandtales @ 11:14 am

Address: 238 Sct. Bayoran cor. Tomas Morato

Quezon City, Metro Manila

TEl no:(02)4113105

Capacity: 60pax

Parking: Ample Space available in front of the restaurant

Located in the dizzying area of Tomas Morato with the numerous restaurant to choose from. We ended up eating at this place with a funny name:) All rice meals are served with what else…. but two eggs.

Place was well lit, clean and big.  There is an LCD TV showing your favorite sport  show, either Basketball or any other sports . There is a big function room for private parties.

Serving primarily Filipino cuisine with a few “americanized” versions of  dishes.

Let go to the food

Ground pork wrapped in Cabbage- 2eggsthis looks more like a chinese dish than a filipino dish. Ground pork wrapped in cabbage leaves and nori  then braised till cooked. It was a average appetizer, not something i would order again though. The meat inside was substantial and seasoned just right.

Steak and Eggs- 2eggs5served with two eggs cooked the way you like it. I asked it to be cooked sunny side up and it was done perfectly. Dont expect any Angus or Wagyu beef here. you will get local beef and if you are lucky it will be tender. Good thing i was lucky anf i got a tender piece. Cooked medium well to well. I cant blamed them coz it hard to cooked a steak this thin. But i least i got my meat craving with this dish. It would have been a perfect breakfast to have this every morning:) right carnivores???

Archie’s Special- 2eggs2this is pert of the “americanized” dishes, they have another one called Popeye’s, which is just spinach and eggs, i got this dish because it got bacon and ham. The sour cream drizzled on top gave it a tart taste, i know some of you wll either love it or hate it. I like sour cream so i love this dish.

Binagoongang Baboy-2eggs4 served crispy on a bed of sliced eggplants, the bagoong penetrating the pork pieces very well, imparting a salty taste but not getting overboard with the saltiness. Nice to eat it with rice:).
