Hongkong Food Chronicles – another trip to Tsui Wah

Filed under: Hong Kong — gourmandtales @ 11:07 am

I rarely eat at the same restaurant twice unless i really like the place and proud to introduce the place to others. Heres one more trip to Tsui Wah. and here is what we had

Toasted noodles with sauteed prawns- SP_A2767this looks so good in the picture. and thank God the actual dish didnt disappoint. TH prawns were big plump and crispy to the bite. It was sauteed in a sweet and spicy sauce. I love the noodles too. Crispy but once it soaked up the sauce , it became aldente.

Beef Curry- SP_A2768 i hate watery curries, and its good that this curry wasnt. It was thick and creamy. The beef chunks were tender.

Hainaese Chicken Rice- SP_A2769 my brother has been looking for hainenese chicken rice since we got here. Luckily he was able to eat a good version of it here. With all the sauces along with the chicken. It was indeed a good dish

Again, i repeat, stop eating at Mcdonalds or KFC. Try this places…:)SP_A2771

Been eating here everytime i am in hongkong and when i am not craving for chinese food.   If you guys like OMAKASE, you will defintely love this place as they play on different ingredients in making their rolls

Breaded scallops croquette-SP_A2748 fried perfectly, making it crispy without being oily. The inside has scallops flakes and mashed potato.

Seared Scallop Maki- SP_A2751THe scallops here are cooked using a handheld flame burner, i love how they combine sweet mango mini cubes with this dish. Looks so pretty also

Sweet ebi maki- SP_A2752sweet ebi, defintely fresh and crunchy. THe mayo has something mixed to it that i couldnt figure out what. Another lovely roll

Chicken Teriyaki MakiSP_A2754-  this as just okay, the chicken was juicy which was a good thing.

Spicy Tuna Maki- SP_A2753love the freshness of the tuna and the onterplay of the crunchy veggies on top.

TRy this place out when you are in hongkong, sometimes its better to dine here in the afternoon because they have promos.. well, almost all japanese restaurants here are their opwn promos in the afternoon to lure the pre dinner crowd.SP_A2747

Hong kong Diner treats

Filed under: Hong Kong — gourmandtales @ 9:27 am

If the USA have foods that are associated with everyday eating like Hamburgers, Fries, Hotdogs, Here in the country you have the Tapsilog and all the other silog, Fried Bangus, Sisig,  Adobo, Arrozcaldo, etc..

A typical hongkong restaurant for me looks something like this…m145942623 Where there are cooks in the front preparing different noodles or congee variation, THe is a lot of steam in that glasds cubicle. No kitchen gloves here, THe cooks here have heat proof hands, you can see them chop very hot items without the helo of a tong.

Here are the things i usually order in a typical hongkong restaurant.

Wanton Noodles- SP_A2746Even the not so good wantons in hongkong are better than the wantons we have here. The best i had so far are the ones in Tsim Cha Kee and Maks in Central.

Fried Rice- SP_A2744I dont know how they do it, but fried rice here is really really good. Every morsel of rice is coated with a little oil and a lot of flavor. THey dont scrimp on the ingredients as well.

Beef Tendon and beef brisket-SP_A2745 Cooked for hours, this is as tender as any beef can get. I wonder how Wagyu beef tendon taste like:)

TO those going to hongkong, stop eating at MCdonalds, KFC, etc.. try this little restos and order what the locals order, point if you cant read the menu. Try to be adventurous.:)

Toast Box – Silvercordmall, Tsim Sha Tsui- Canton Road

Filed under: Hong Kong — gourmandtales @ 10:08 am

I have heard of ToastBox in Trinoma mall but i havent tried it out yet. Here is the Hongkong franchise of this Singaporean Original.  Established in Dec 2005, this restaurant has branches in Hongkong, Malaysia, Philippines, China, Thailand.

Here i tasted something for the 1st time.. i never thought i would like it.. no. its not KAYA… not its not the coffee.. its the eggs..SP_A2788

I never imagine soft boiled eggs mized with a sweet thick soy sauce would be so…so.. good…SP_A2792 perfect with the kaya toast that accompanied it..SP_A2789SP_A2793

To egg lovers like me.. try this one.. there is a franchise in Trinoma… i hope it is still open though…:)

here are the other things i tried.

Peanut Butter Thick Toast-SP_A2790 thick toasr with thick peanut butter.. excellent crunch to a creamy peanut goodness, Good quality.

Spicy Prawn Toast-SP_A2791 this was so-so.. the shrimp was a bit negligable in size,

Hong Kong Series – 98C – Tsim Sha Tsui

Filed under: Hong Kong — gourmandtales @ 8:14 am

This place will catch your attention when you pass by it. The colors of the signage and interiors are shouting at you to be noticed.  So out of curiosity we went in to try the food.

THe food here is basically Asian. Mixture of Chinese and Singaporean Cuisine.

WE love the idea of having clean utensils/napkins, ready tableside by having a drawer underneath the dining table where it is kept. Nice right?SP_A2723

Chicken Rice bowl-SP_A2724 my brother ordered the chicken rice, thinking it would be like the hainanese chicken rice, but this was what we got.  Served in a stone bowl(same as what is used in Bibimbap in korean restaurants) Serving size was huge. THe veggies was cooked, but still maintain its crispyness. THe chicken was steamed, but it was marinated in a sauce that stucked with the chicken but still it was a bit bland.

Beef Hofan-SP_A2725 this was good, a bit oily though. Lots of meat and the noodles were aldente even if it absorb the flavors of the beef and different seasoning.

Seafood Baked rice in white sauce-SP_A2726 Appearance wise it looks nice, but taste wise… there were few seafood pieces. THe sauce was bland and tasted like diluted milk.

All in all, i thikn we just ordered the wrong thig. They have a lot of white chicken on display, so i think hainanese chicken rice would be the right thing to order here. Our mistake. sorry:)SP_A2722

Tao Heung 88 – Various locations in HongKong

Filed under: Hong Kong — gourmandtales @ 8:40 am

Here is one of he more famous restaurant that is known for their DIMSUM. People in hongkong would usually order one of two dishes and spend the whoel day reading the newspaper or talking and sharing stories with one another.  When you see people ordering a lot of dishes. more often than not, they are not from HK.:)

Place was swamp with locals. Be ready to fall in line and wait for a table. Service was quick. Place is as clean as any chinese restaurant can get.

on the table

Radish cake cube, fried with XO sauce- SP_A2730a different taste on the usual radish cake.  I love XO sauce.. the combination of Dried scallops, chilies, etc, etc.. its a wonderful sauce and to blend it with radish cake that would eventually absorb it. Yummy. It could use more sauce though:)

Congee with century egg and pork-SP_A2731 very good  congee, the rice was soft and cooked to the brink that it would eventually melt. THe century egg was of high quality meaning the yolk was silky smooth.

Hakao-SP_A2733 Hongkong hakao is really a taste ot behold. Plump filling, thin and elastic wrapper that is made just right to hold the stuffing.  Indeed one of my favorite chinese dish.

Cheong Fan(asado)SP_A2732- rice rolls, steam to perfectio, elastic and gummy yet very delicious, the filling was overflowing to the ends was you can see, the sweet and slightly salty sauce was just perfect for the dish

Cha Xiu Bao(asado  siopao)-SP_A2734 hot of the steamer, still smoking.. they didnt scrimp on the filling here. Sweet and salty at the same time. THe meat bit was tender and not too much fat was present.

SioMai- SP_A2735 aisde from hakao, Hongkong restaurants siomai really is a world different from our siomai.. except maybe from the siomai at LiLi and Shang palace. You can taste the combination of Shrimp and pork here. And i mean SHRimp..

Lotus leaf wrapped riceSP_A2738- sticky rice cooked inside the leaf itself. sanwich in between the rice layers are chopped chicken and pork. bery heavy and filling

Pan Fried Radish cake-SP_A2736 what makes their radish cake different from our is that the texture is smoother. and packed.

Spareribs with Chicken Feet-SP_A2737 i wonder why we dont make something liek this, two viands in one order so that you get to taste two kinds already. Calling all dimsum places here.  the pork is very very tender. with the right amount of fat. The chicken feet was also very well cooked. not too skinny, lots of gelatinous goodness:) So friends, stop with the breakfast at Mc do.. try what the locals are eating.. eat here…:)SP_A2729

Hong Kong Series – Tsui Wah- Central

Filed under: Hong Kong — gourmandtales @ 7:55 am

Meeting up with an old friend. We were waling around Wellington St in Central and was discussing where to eat, Having tried the famous wanton noodle places. We decided to eat at this Hongkong Coffe Shop.. yes , this is a coffee shop for the Hong Kong people. Though they serve meals as well. Its a famous restaurant.

Service is quick. Food serve hot.  Place not as celan as a fine dining restaurant but clean enough. They have a lot of choices. But there are the interesting ones.

Hong kong French Toast-SP_A2716 humongous piece of french toast. Done the crispy way. Its two slices of bread, sandwich in between is what i think was condensed milk.. then dipped in egg and instead of just pan frying it, this one is deep fried. Served with syrup.. Yummy.

Lamb Chops in curry sauce served with roti.SP_A2717SP_A2718- 3 chops, cooked mediumwell(no asking here how your lamb is to be cooked, just hope and pray thats its not well done. hehe) The curry sauce was thick and creamy. THe roti was fantastic.SP_A2719 it was crispy on the outside and soft and chewy inside. Perfect to scoop the sauce and eat it.

This is a nice place to eat at. I usually dont eat at KFC or MCdo here and just try this places,
